RE: Overheated Optima Battery

I got rid of my Optima battery this past summer. I bought one two years ago, fist one lasted 2 weeks then lost charge and would not do anything. Walmart replaced it. Less than 6 moths later I went out to start the MH and battery was again dead. Back to Walmart and checked it, (internal fault) so replaced again. I got a new start battery so the optima was used to run the wife's lift and it worked until this spring. I could not get it to take a charge, took it back and they checked it, zero voltage so another internal fault. I tole them I wanted to get rid of the optima and get a conventional battery so they refunded what I originally paid for the Optima and for almost half what the Optima cost I bout a large conventional. I for one will not get another Optima.....

RE: Damon's "Avanti" Trend?, Yes/No!

North Americans are a fickle bunch (Both US and Canada) and are for the most part used to having a lot more space to live in as well as to drive on. In Europe road are narrower and gas is almost double what it is here so they are used to smaller MH's. As our gas keeps going up I can see more people here going for something like the Avanti or importing from Europe. I like Europe MH's better for a few reasons, subdued elegance of interiors is only one as opposed to the glitz that the high end MH's here have. Our MH is a 29' w no slides and is narrower than todays and at the moment I will keep it. If I can get something similar sized with better milage it would be really tempting. The odd time I would like more space but I can live with ours, only time it gets tight is if there are 6 or 7 adults.

RE: to leave water or not to leave water is the ?

I generally don't fill mine all the way, why carry all that weight and have it sloshing around? I do the sanitize thing and drain it and put in enough water to get me where I am going, if needed I add more water on the way. We use ours for drinking and I am generally not to fussy about taste (ie hard or soft water etc). When I get home and am not planning on going anywhere again that year I drain the system including the hot water tank. Algae as mentioned needs light and Mine is under the floor so no light get to it. If we are planning on going anywhere again I will leave what water is in it alone and check before we leave and maybe add more.

RE: chevrolet rear brakes

It all depends on the brake pad material, some last longer than others. I had to change rear brake pads on my 82 Triple E MH after about 30,000 miles. I now had sever duty pads which should give me longer life. I know that the last rip through the mountains was very hard on the brakes in general and rears more than the fronts, but I changed them all anyways. Pads were around 200 for both front and rear. I also had to change one rear disc and caliper. I did all the work myself so all it was, was the time and materials. We changed all pads etc in about 3 hrs as well as bleeding system. Does he dive in mountains? or does he ride them? Some people left foot brake and some rest their foot on the brake all the time and that will wear them down pretty fast. If that is not the case check that the pistons are not seized or dragging.

RE: Post photos of your toyhauler

PSNFM,now you no longer have the smallest TH So what brand is yours? Your profile doesn't mention what you have and picture shows no markings, kind of hard to know what it is :)

RE: Cool Austrian RV

A great one for the Ugliest trailer thread. Totally impractical and looks weird!

RE: LPG gauge?

Propane gauges are optimistic at best. My Triple E runs on propane (engine) and I have gauges but they are never close. Mine on the tank itself is also not accurate. I know about how far I can go, then I start looking for somewhere to fill. I can if needed run on gas and I always have one tank at least 1/2 full as we do places where propane can't be readily found. Any propane service place should be able to sell you another gauge and install it.

RE: Post you Rig Pics Here

Well, just got back from a fantastic long weekend. Went up to my wife's family farm, only about a 3 hr drive each way. Trip up was nice, not too hot (+26 or so c or 78 f for those that don't like metric) but with a cool breeze, motorhome never ran any higher than 190 deg all the way up. Pretty good milage (9ish). Saturday was visiting with immediate family. Sunday we were supposed to go watch stock car races (dirt track) but there had been lots of rain, so much so that cars could not get around very well at all. So we went to a local park where some cousins were supposed to be. They were there as well as some cousins that we had never met. little damp part of the time but had a nice sunset as it cleared for about an hour before more rain. Took this picture on Sat when we checked out the track http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s76/lzasitko/100_0503.jpg and as I turned around it was reflected in the motorhomes windows http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s76/lzasitko/100_0506.jpg Visited with everyone until after 11 pm then back to the farm. Monday it was still light rain but after running around the track in all the 4x4's they could find it dried out enough to race. Had a great time but heavier rain about 4:30 cancelled the last couple of races. Today was back visiting at the family farm then drive home so we can relax a bit. All in all a really good weekend. Will be going back up in 3 weeks or so to visit with my wife's mother in law that will be visiting then back up again for racing the middle of Oct when it is the provincials that weekend (so far 40 cars confirmed for racing) so will be a a good few days of racing, just hope it warms up again. Tonight is supposed to have lows around 5 deg c (41 f) so we covered all the plants just in case of frost. Tomorrow I have to get back to work on my laminate floors I am doing and do a few jars of pickles in the morning.... Hope everyones weekend was good.... Edited so picture show I hope :)

RE: Macintosh and Music?

Depends on what you are after. There are torrent files or Limewire or Aquisition (illegal) If you have usenet access there are groups that post complete albums or individual songs in almost any type you want but again is illegal jamendo is a site where artists post their music and you can legally download them or listen online. Almost all music is indie or unsigned by major labels so you will not see the big name bands on there. However I have found some very good music that would rival any of the mainstream artists. Or just use iTunes, with it you have access to the iTunes Store where you can buy music either individually or albums. They have a free track every tuesday to highlight an artist. There are also rss feeds where you can download free music (almost like radio)

RE: New roman shades?

Roman shades are a pleated shade that folds up to the top. Pleats are around 6 to 8" high. Easy to make and you can buy the cam locks so you don't have to tie it off. I have a link somewhere but you search on the net you will find lots of info

RE: Camping World dump site closed forever

Lots of places are not allowing dumping at all because some people are not careful and leave a mess, not something that I would want to clean up! Some places will let you dump only if you fill up and in some cases they will have someone come and watch. I had this happen in Kelowna. Their dump was inside and two hoses for people to use (one on either side) You have to get them to let you in and they will not let you out if you left a mess. The dump can be seen from inside the office. Not a bad setup. Here in Canada almost every Husky station has a dump though some are no longer open. Just a shame that one or two have to ruin it for everyone

RE: Wal-Mart Inverter

An inverter is rated in watts not amp hours. 400 watts will let you light up 4 100 watt bulbs. With an inverter that size it is best used for small devices like tv's stereo's computers etc. How long depends on the battery source it is hooked up to and as been pointed out the draw on it. $89 is pretty pricey for that, for example, I bought a 750 watt for under $30.00

RE: HOT TUBS in general SOFTUB in specific

We had a hot tube for many years and not many problems. Chemicals were not that bad and we used ours all the time, wish I still had it but when we moved to our current house there was no space for it and it sat in the garage for a while, then a friend bought it. Ours was always an indoor one, never could see the interest in going out in -35 temperatures to get in and then to get back in the house. In our old house we had an addition with a family room, space for the hot tube (extra, extra wide walkway) and stairs up to our bedroom loft. In the winter here it is very dry and we did not have problems with moisture. Used to get up in the morning and soak for 20 minutes then get ready for work. After a long day it was great to relax in. Kids all liked it too. We have talked about getting another but my wife is now in a wheelchair so would have to make some way to get her in and out, preferably something she could use on her own as I do spend time away. I would get another in a heartbeat. Um, I have space downstairs that would be large enough for one but getting it down would be a problem..... but then I would have to figure out how to get the wife downstairs....

RE: Natural Gas Engine

Here the city has converted most of their vehicles to run on NG but there is only one other place in town where you can buy it. Propane on the other hand is widely available across the country. Our MH was converted at some point by the previous owner to run on either gas or propane. I have run it on both but propane is almost 40 cents a liter cheaper than regular gas so thats what I burn, have not had any problems and have driven through the mountains a few times. A year ago I bought propane in Vancouver BC for 43 cents a liter while gas was $1.20 or under $2 for you Yanks out there :) At one time it was popular to convert vehicles to propane but not many do it any more. Biggest issue is range, mine will go about 3 hrs between fills. I have thought of taking out the second gas tank which we never use and replace it with more propane but cylinders are not cheap and weight would become an issue. Another big plus for propane and NG is they burn a lot cleaner, reports say they put out about 1/10 the pollution of the same size gas engine.

RE: Creating Audio Books

I would think MP3 would be available to the widest market. Most cd players now will play MP3 and most little players are MP3 based. Audacity is good for the PC's. There is similar programs for Macs.

RE: Advice and Prayers Please!!!

All that fresh air makes everyone sleep good, even us old as the hills folk. We were always told to do what we want and not to change because of children, ie don't turn music or tv down etc, they will adapt to it. Ours certainly never suffered from it. I listen to a lot of music and even though I am in my mid 50's I listen to all types from old to very new. Can't say I like certain types, I like listening to voices not screaming, growling etc nor do I listen to rap and I am not a country fan though the wife is so I do here some of it. All our kids also listen to a very wide range of music. We always took our children camping, youngest was about 3 months old the first time out. Didn't have problems and she even slept through the night which was nice for us :)

RE: Generator to run a AC unit in the Travel Star ck19

Look for a 3000 watt start 2500 watt cont. I know our 13500 needs over 2000 watts to start it and 1800 once it is running. Lots to choose from, just depends on your budget for it. And don't let this get into another Honda vs everything else battle :) Honda's are nice and quiet but you also pay a lot for them....

RE: Removing all 4 wheels on fiver?

I needed to do rear brakes on our A. I bought a 20 ton hydraulic / pneumatic jack and a couple 5 ton jack stands. I put one jack stand on the frame in front and one behind the rear wheels. Pneumatic jack makes pretty easy work of it but need about 100 psi. I used a portable compressor so had to stop and let it build up pressure a couple times but it beats doing it by hand :) While it was apart we replaced the axles seals and checked and repacked the bearings. Your jack should work fine but depending on height you may have to block it up. In my case I used paver blocks (solid) on our concrete driveway. Had to park the MH crossways because closer to the road it slopes a bit. Where I parked (as close to the garage as possible it was pretty flat. Once it is on the jack stands it is really stable or at least I didn't worry too much and there are few days here when we don't have wind.

RE: Persuading Wife To Try Driving MH

Take to make her comfortable, find a big quiet parking lot. My wife is in a wheelchair so her driving is out of the question unless we add hand controls. But two of my three children have driven it. My youngest son (4th year Journeyman mechanic) and my only daughter. Neither has any hesitation in driving it, in fact I let our daughter drive it for me when we get to Calgary (where she lives and knows all the shortcuts). Our son has taken it for a couple weekends with friends and are planning for next years Craven Festival, him and all the kids that he went to school with almost 10 years ago. When we found the MH and test drove it my daughter drove it also. First time or two was in a big parking lot so nothing to hit :) but has to be in her comfort zone or you are fighting a loosing battle, wives always get their way in the end :) no matter what you want....
